Our soul winning verse from the Word of God today is Matthew 18:3 which reads: “Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

Our soul winning quote today is from George Whitefield: “Before you or I can have any well-grounded, scriptural hope, of being happy in a future state, there must be some great, some notable, and amazing change pass upon our souls.”

Our soul winning devotional today is part 8 of our series titled “What Evangelism Is” from Dave Earley and David Wheeler’s fine book, “Evangelism Is…: How to Share Jesus with Passion and Confidence.”

Evangelism is leading people to true conversion.

The four steps to true salvation are:

1. CURIOUS: Curious about who Jesus is and what Jesus did and can do for you.

2. CONVICTED: Convicted by the Holy Spirit of your sin and the resulting judgment.

3. CONVINCED: Convinced that Jesus is the sinless Son of God and that salvation comes only through Him.

4. CONVERTED: Converted or turned around through active faith that leads you to turn from sin and to God for salvation.

In the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, we find that Jesus had been busy healing the sick. To top that off, He had performed the amazing miracle of feeding 5,000 men with a boy’s lunch of five small barley loaves and two small fish. The crowds were curious about the identity of this miracle man so they followed Him in droves wondering what He would do next and hoping He would meet more of their needs.

As the chapter unfolds, Jesus discerned the shallowness of their dedication. By bringing them to a point of decision about His identity, He called them to the level of commitment to Him that would make them true followers. Sadly, at this point some turned back, but not all.

John 6:66-69 says: “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”

While salvation often begins with curiosity, it takes more than curiosity in Jesus to experience true conversion. It takes experiencing the conviction of the Holy Spirit as He convinces us of our sin, our lack of true righteousness, and the resulting judgment. It takes being convinced that Jesus is indeed the Christ, the sinless Son of God, by believing the Word of God. It takes confident faith that He truly has the words of life and a resulting commitment to follow Jesus. Truly following Jesus will result in our turning from our old lifestyles of sin and turning to God in complete trust in Jesus and in determined obedience to His Word. Such a turning results in a truly changed life.
