Our soul winning quote today is from Mohandas Gandhi. He said: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Our soul winning devotional is part 62 of our series titled “What Evangelism Is” from Dave Earley and David Wheeler.

Evangelism Is…Being the Change You Wish to See In the World

Young Professionals Are Being the Change

A group of young professionals and graduate students in Lynchburg, Virginia, call themselves “Life Group.” They want to make a difference.

Recently more than a dozen young adults from Life Group gathered on a cold and rainy day to tear down ceilings, gut interior walls, and to clean up a yard filled with trash and debris from years of neglect. After hours of labor, they shared Christ with the appreciative homeowner. She was delighted to find people who cared for others in need.

As she told of her failing health and a near-death experience, the door was opened to share the gospel. Eventually one of the young adults asked her, “If you died then, where would you have spent eternity?” The group shifted gears from being a group of humanitarians to a team of caring evangelists. Although the woman knew the group had come from a local church, she was now connecting the dots between their honest compassion for her physical well-being and the loving message of Christ and the cross.

This type of ministry in action breaks down the walls of resistance in communities everywhere. The homeless are being fed and prison inmates are receiving love from visitors committed to sharing the gospel in both word and deed. Our communities are filled with hurting people, especially in times of financial recession. We can make a difference if we will get to know our neighbors, the people we work with, and anyone outside of our Christian comfort zones.

Angel Tree

Every Christmas thousands of churches and local businesses collect gifts for children of incarcerated parents through a ministry of Prison Fellowship called “Angel Tree.” One church who regularly participated in Angel Tree decided to do something extra for the kids. Instead of just collecting gifts from church members and their families, this local fellowship brought a group of volunteers together and created a carnival-like atmosphere for the hurting children. Church members provided special events for the day’s festivities.

Children were brought to a location where they could play games, have their faces painted, shoot basketball hoops, and eat lots of goodies. They also received Christmas gifts based on their requests. By doing this, the church was able to personalize their love for the children, the foster parents, and their incarcerated parents. It was as if Jesus physically walked into the prison and hugged everyone in His path!

In our next broadcast, we will continue looking at why evangelism is…Being the Change You Wish to See In the World.
